Abstract

This study was designed and undertaken to identify the degree of burden and quality of life in family caregivers of patient with chronic disease and to determine whether burden was directly related to quality of life.
This study was performed with 111 caregivers as a family member and 111 patients with chronic disease who were hospitalized in one university hospital, two general hospitals located in J city.
The data were collected from August 1, 2000 to January 30, 2001.
The questionnaires consisted of questions regarding burden(26 items) and quality of life(18 items) of caregivers.
Data was analyzed by frequency, means, percentage, standard deviations, t-test, ANOVA, pearson¡¯s Correlation Coefficient.
The results of this study are as follow;
1. The mean score for family caregiver¡¯s burden was higher than the middle score (M=2.75).
2. The mean score for family caregiver¡¯s quality of life was lower than the middle score (M=3.64).
3. The relationship between a burden and quality of life was showed a significant inverse correlation.
4. The sex (t=-2.44, p<.05) and monthly income (F=3.98, P<.05) and diagnosis (t=-3.79, p<.05) of chronic patient had statistically significant differences in the family caregiver¡¯s burden.
5. The age (F=4.85, p<.01) and education status (F=8.06, p<.01) and monthly income (F=14.45, F=.01) and relationship with patient (I=6.48, p<.01) and most care money giver (F=1.01, p<.01) of caregiver¡¯s had statistically significant differences in the family caregiver¡¯s burden.
6. The sex (t=-3.91, p<.01) and age (F=4.29, p<.01) and education status (F=3.17, p<.01) and job (F=3.28, p<.05) and religion (F=4.55, p<.05) and patient caring duration (F=2.09, p<.05) and diagnosis (t=-2.34, p<.05) of chronic patient had statistically significant differences in the quality of life.
7. The sex (t=2.23, p<.05) and monthly income (F=10.54M, p<.01) and recognition of disease (F=4.46, p<.05) and most care money giver (F=4.22, p<.01) of caregiver¡¯s had statistically significant differences in the quality of life.
